My Cancer Story

Posted on Wednesday 10 January 2007

As I approach the end of my treatments. I’ll write my tale of what it was like to be diagnosed, go through surgery, and 12 intense treatments of chemo.

I’ll be as detailed as possible and submit the stories in small pieces over time. Once this is over, I’ll begin my entertaining posts again periodically while juggling between a full time job, a part time job, and my own company that I started over the past few months.

Gay’d by a 64

Posted on Monday 11 December 2006

Warning, not a funny post, only read if you are a nerd

There are a two or three posts missing because I forgot to backup my most recent database before formatting my server.

I was super happy with my server until things starting acting gay. For starters, the drivers for the 64 bit version of my ati card are terrible and xgl is rarely updated for dapper64, but I could live without that because I wasn’t planning on using it as a desktop very often.

Everything was handy dandy until I wanted to install mythtv which they don’t compile for 64 bit operating systems. You have to compile it yourself. Why is this stupid? Because the beauty of linux is it’s package management systems. Your system can be up to date with all the latest software in only a couple clicks, so why would i want to deal with the hastle of compiling and upgrading the program everytime it was updated? I wouldn’t. Why can’t they do it? Cause they are fucking lazy. Compiling a program for a different processor of the same architecture is only a few more steps for them, but most people in the open source community don’t compile anything for you. They give you the source code as the program.

Okay I’m rambling, but being that I had to figure out, no guide, how to make a chrooted 32 bit environment run simultaneously with mythtv and all the server software it needed, was just a gigantic waste of my time. Sure it was possible, sure i got it working, but I don’t care enough to have to deal with the problems I may be faced with in the future. I’m literaly out of commission for an entire week from the chemo, which i getting harder and harder, and I’d rather not waste my time if I don’t have to.

Mythtv wasn’t the only reason, there are a few programs I enjoy using that they don’t compile for 64’s and I choose not to compile! Especially after leaving gentoo…..

Self Playing Violin Debunked

Posted on Saturday 21 October 2006

In response to the latest digg article, I noticed the video at the bottom that gave recognition to the engineer who created the ‘world’s first self playing violin’. Unfortunately, I have to apologize to the engineer, Tom Dolan, as you are ~200 years too late.

I recently went to a museum in Silmar called the Nethercutt Museum. For any of you who live in the LA area, I highly recommend it as it is free of charge and an amazing place to go if you like antiques.

While there, I was fortunate to experience the music created by orchestra boxes created hundreds ago, fully restored. One of which was called a Phonoliszt-Violina by Hupfield. It’s composed of a piano and three violins all fully operated by a music roll. It’s an amazing piece of engineering and I couldn’t help but notice how much smarter an engineer had to be to build such a beautiful piece of equipment with the limited resources of the 1800’s.

So to the maker of the Virtuoso Violin, Tom Dolan: Do your homework and research before you make any ridiculous claims you fucking noob.

Ubuntu + AIGLX + BERYL + COMPIZ = !Windows

Posted on Saturday 21 October 2006

The Dell 700m is one of the most popular laptops. I am currently putting together a tutorial of how to get your Dell 700m laptop running with Ubuntu and all the beautiful wonders that would make you want to switch to Linux. Check out the latest tutorial here, and email me with questions, problems, or updates.

It should be noted that more comedy is soon to come. I’m currently going through chemo therapy so my sense of humor has been a bit dry. But check back later for stories that will make you laugh and pee.

NES, to Wii or not to Wee

Posted on Monday 2 October 2006

Nintendo is known for their prominent and popular entertainment systems. Much hype is currently spreading over their new console, the Wii. (Pronounced Wee, seriously). But before the Wii has even hit markets, the next generation home video gamming system is currently being developed. Swabby, a canhesaythat author and proud software developer to many ‘hello world’ applications, is currently going to one of the best pre-engineering schools in the West Coast Central California area. He is an independant contractor for Nintendo Entertainment and is playing a key role in the development of the Wii’s successor. But due to confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, he can’t reveal too much about the console. However, he has negotiated with Nintendo the release of their new logo.

Unusual Finding

Posted on Wednesday 20 September 2006

While cleaning my room, I found a jewelwry box with what looks like my writing when I was ~10 written on it.  It read the following:

Handstand

Backwordspin

Stand with backflip

Dive off Ramp

Barrel Roll

Please feel free to make educated guesses on what this might be for/from or why I wrote this on a jewelry box in the comment section.

Lightbox

Posted on Sunday 10 September 2006

After a recent article on digg, I had to try this new plugin called lightbox. So here is an example of it working….my compassionate cousin Robert showing his love to my loving kitten Tikvah.

Edit: If it doesn’t work, try waiting for the youtube video to appear. Possible bug i have to look into..
